#ClassicsADay - the August double theme!

For August we had two competing themes: World Cup a Day and Czech a Day. The votes were pretty evenly divided among the two themes, and by mid-day Friday, July 30th several participants tweeted that they'd be up for both.

So here it is: for August, we'll actually be using three hashtags. For general comments about August, or if you want to talk about both themes, use #Classicsaday.

If you're cycling through the classical music of the World Cup participating countries, use #WorldCupaday for your tweet -- and if possible, include the country of the composer.

EX: Listening to Peter Schulthorpe's 1st String Quartet #WorldCupaDay Australia

If you're going to be listening to music by Czech composers, use the #Czechaday.

Below are more details about each theme. And away we go!

 #WorldCupADay
The challenge is to listen to classical music from each of the countries that fielded a team in the World Cup. Each day you should listen to music from a different country. There were 32 countries represented, and 31 days in the month of August, so you legitimately skip at least one country -- it may be a real challenge to find classical music from countries like North Korea. The FIFA list of participating countries.

#CzechADay
The challenge is to listen to classical music composed by a native son (or daughter) from the area now known as the Czech Republic. The music can be from any style period, the composers living or dead. In addition to major composers such as Antonin Dvorak, Bedrich Smetana, Janos Janacek and Bohislav Martinu, there are many others to choose from. For example, there's Zdenek Fibich, Jan Ladislav Dusek, Adalbert Gyrowetz, Johann Zelenka, Heinrich Iganz Franz von Biber, Franz Krommer, and many, many more.

Previous #ClassicsADay Themes

If you're late to the party, or trying to think of a new theme, here's a list of themes from previous months.

June, 2010
#SchumannADay
This theme was in honor of Robert Schumann's birthday. It wasn't long before some people were also including the music of his wife, Clara Wieck Schumann!

May, 2010
#LivingComposerADay
Not all the great classical music has been written -- and not all the great composers are dead! In May we listened to living composers from all over the world. Some old masters, others young Turks, with quite a few composers inbetween those two extremes. Is classical music dying? Judging by the amount of music listened to this month from living composers, no.

April, 2010
#RussianComposerADay
To mark the birthdays of Sergei Rachmaninoff and Sergei Prokofiev (both born in April), this month we listened to music by Russian composers from 1800's up to the present.

March 2010
#ConcertoADay
If the composer called it a concerto, then it was fair game. In March Twitterers listened to everything from concerto grossos of the 1700's to repertoire masterworks to modernist chamber concertos for small groups of instruments.

February 2010
#SymphonyADay
Symphony's a pretty broad term -- covering everything from the sinfonias of the Baroque up to the offerings of modern composers. The selections by participating Twitterers was as far-ranging and varied as the recorded repertoire allowed.

Upcoming #ClassicsADay Themes

 August, 2010
HELP US DECIDE WHICH OF THESE TWO THEMES TO GO WITH. SEND A TWEET WITH EITHER #WORLDCUPADAY OR #CZECHADAY

For example, there's Zdenek Fibich, Jan Ladislav Dusek, Adalbert Gyrowetz, Johann Zelenka, Heinrich Iganz Franz von Biber, Franz Krommer, and many more besides!

September, 2010
#HistoricRecordingADay
The idea is to listen to at least one historic recording of classical music every day. What defines a historic recording? To keep it simple, we're saying it has to be a mono recording (which means mostly records made before 1950). You can listen to a remastered version, or a reissue, but the source recording has to have been issued as a mono recording.

It may seem daunting, but I think you'll be surprised at the rich legacy of performances available once you start digging.

How are themes determined?
The #ClassicsADay themes are created and decided upon solely by consensus of the participants. This page is here just to serve as a reference to what's already been discussed, not to officially set any kind of agenda.

If you have suggestions or thoughts for what themes we should explore, you can leave a comment below, or -- better yet -- just offer your suggestion in a tweet with the current month's hashtag.

#ClassicsADay basics

How to participate in a #ClassicsADay thread.

1. Have -- or get -- a Twitter account.
The conversations are all on Twitter, so you'll need to have an active account to participate.

2. Use the related hashtag for your tweets.
The hashtag is the word or phrase with a pound sign in front of it. The hashtag for "Classics a Day" is #classicsaday; the one for "Russian Composers a Day" is #russiancomposeraday, and so on. It's important to use the hashtag as Twitter automatically makes it a link. You can click on the hashtag in any received tweet and instantly all the messages that include it.

3. Use the related hashtag whenever possible in responses.
This helps other follow the whole conversation. Take the following exchange, for example.
@Person1: Listening to Brahms' 1st Symphony w/Bernstein.
[reply] @Person 2: Meh. I much prefer Karajan's version w/the Vienna Phil.
Only those following both people would see this feed.
@Person1: Listening to Brahms' 1st Symphony w/Bernstein. #Brahmsaday
[reply] @Person 2: Meh. I much prefer Karajan's version w/the Vienna Phil.

Those who were following the hashtag #Brahmsaday would see the first tweet, but not the response.
@Person1: Listening to Brahms' 1st Symphony w/Bernstein. #Brahmsaday

[reply] @Person 2: Meh. I much prefer Karajan's version w/the Vienna Phil.#Brahmsaday
Now everyone interested can see the whole conversation -- and one or more may want to join in with their thoughts on superior performances.

With only 140 characters, though, sometimes you won't have enough room for the hashtag and everything you want to say. Don't sweat it. Respond and don't worry about the hashtag. This is supposed to be fun, not something with a lot of rules.

4. Abbreviate at will.
With only 140 characters, and some of them already committed to the hashtag, space is a challenge. Feel free to use "&" for "and", "w/" for "with" and so on. Also, any kind of contraction for ensembles and works that keeps the meaning clear are fair game. "Cto" for "Concerto," "Orch" for "Orchestra," etc. Note also that I'm not using periods to denote the contraction -- that's just one more character!

5. Include links, but keep them short!
Linking to articles, websites, product pages, videos, etc. can add depth to your tweet. Many URLs (web addresses) are pretty long, though -- sometimes too long. The URL for this page, for example, is http://ctady.blogspot.com/2010/07/classicsaday-basics.html -- 59 characters. A URL-shortener site can trim that down to a few characters. Hit.ly, for example, shorted that 59-character address to http://ht.ly/25S1M -- 18 characters.

6. Have fun and play nicely.
You'll find that the #classicaladay crowd is a pretty nice bunch of folks from all over the world. While most everyone has opinions about works, composers, and performers, it seldom gets into the way of the conversation. You won't be put down for your choice of music, relative inexperience or ignorance, or anything like that. And you'll have a better time if you extend the same courtesies to your fellow tweeps.
